Practice B — Chapter 6

Consolidation target: Consolidate both directions of fraction division and mixed contextual applications.

Fresh problems from the immediately preceding lesson cluster. Show all work and attach correct units.

Consolidation questions

Consolidation questions 1 · measurement division

How many 1/3-meter pieces can you cut from 6 meters of ribbon with no waste?

Consolidation questions 2 · measurement division

How many 1/2-meter pieces can you cut from 2 meters of ribbon with no waste?

Consolidation questions 3 · fraction group measurement

How many 2/3-liter-sized groups are in 4 liters? Count a partial final group as a fraction of a group.

Consolidation questions 4 · fraction group measurement

How many 5/6-liter-sized groups are in 5 liters? Count a partial final group as a fraction of a group.

Consolidation questions 5 · measuring problem

2 kg of clay is divided into packets that each weigh 3/4 kg. How many packet-sized measures does that make? Count any partial packet as a fraction of a packet.

Consolidation questions 6 · measuring problem

3 kg of clay is divided into packets that each weigh 1/3 kg. How many packet-sized measures does that make? Count any partial packet as a fraction of a packet.

Representation and explanation

Use Consolidation Questions 1 and 2 above (not two questions of your choice). For Question 1 draw a full length segmented into equal unit-fraction lengths. For Question 2 draw a full length segmented into equal unit-fraction lengths. Label all quantities, include physical measurement units when they are part of the question, show which operation your model proves, and check the answers by an inverse calculation or a size estimate.
